BLOOMINGTON, Ind.—The Michigan Wolverine men’s basketball team led by as many as 18 points and held off a late rally by the Indiana Hoosiers to win 70-67 at Assembly Hall on Saturday afternoon.
For Michigan, coached by IU graduate Dusty May, they have won four straight games. Indiana dropped their fifth straight.
Danny Wolf led Michigan with 20 points and nailed four free throws late in the game to seal the victory.
Malik Reneau scored 16 points to lead the Hoosiers. It was his highest point total since returning from injury. After being held scoreless in the first half, Mackenzie Mgbako scored 15 points in the second half. He missed a three-pointer that would have tied the game with less than 20 seconds left.
Indiana went to a 2-3 zone defense in the second half and the Wolverines went 0-9 from three-point range after hitting five threes in the first half.
IU Athletic Director Scott Dolson said this week that Mike Woodson told him that he would not be returning as the men’s basketball coach next season.
Woodson did not want to address Dolson’s statement, but he did touch briefly on how things have gone lately.
“It’s been emotional,” Woodson said about how the team is handling the last few weeks. “We’re dealing with young men, young kids, man, that are trying to figure it out. But we’ve still got seven more games to play, and it’s my job as their coach to try and push them and realize they can still win basketball games.”
Indiana drops to 14-10 overall and 5-8 in the Big Ten. Michigan is now 18-5 overall and 10-2 in Big Ten play.
Indiana plays #9 Michigan State on Tuesday night at 9 pm. Pregame coverage starts at 8 pm on 93.1 WIBC.
