The Indiana Hoosiers officially announced that men’s basketball head coach Mike Woodson, who played for the program from 1976-1980 and has been its head coach since 2021, will be stepping down at the end of the season.

It’s a move that feels like it’s been a long time coming; fans had been calling for Woodson’s departure since the team missed the NCAA Tournament last year. This season has been no better, with Indiana losing four straight games, as well as six of their last seven, as it seems this could be a 2nd straight season of no March Madness for the Hoosiers. Now, Indiana will look to find Woodson’s replacement and revitalize a program that supporters have grown almost apathetic towards.

During the Friday edition of The Ride With JMV, voice of the Hoosiers Don Fischer joined the showed, and shared his reaction to the news that Mike Woodson will not be returning next season.

“Here’s what I think about the whole thing. I think that the proper decision was made under the circumstances that have taken place. Mike came into this position, I think his first two years were really good in the sense of what they were able to accomplish with him being a new coach and the way the system was working at that point in time, but it hasn’t done it in the last two years, there’s no question about that, and at some point you recognize what the issues are…I don’t think anything’s put upon in this situation, I think it’s basically just the way that Mike that feels about it at this juncture, and I can’t blame him for that, because things have not gone well this season. This ballclub right now is struggling; they’ve had some nicely played games, but can’t seem to finish it…When things aren’t going your way, and things aren’t getting done, and players aren’t playing the way you expect them to, I think you have to look in the mirror, and I think that’s exactly what Mike has done.”
