Sunday Scaries: Colts QB Change Fizzles, Eberflus Hot Seat & More!

It’s time for another addition of Sunday Scaries. I apologize for not having an entry last week. We could call of the drama that surrounded the Colts a full week of Sunday Scaries. Between that and the random fall sickness I seemed to have caught last week it all snowballed. But we’re feeling better and we’re back with a look at the highs and lows of Week 9. I always get a bit sentimental around this time of the NFL calendar because we’re halfway through the season which means we’re going to be in the off-season in the blink of an eye and waiting for another season to start. That escalated quickly, right? Try being my brain.
Bad Scary: The Colts QB Change Nets Zero Results
The decision to bench Anthony Richardson for Joe Flacco was because the Colts were in “win now” mode, according to Shane Steichen. How anyone could have watched this team through the first eight games and felt at any point they were “win now” in anything is beyond me. Nevertheless, that was their justification for pulling the plug on Anthony Richardson and why Joe Flacco got the nod against the Vikings on Sunday Night Football. The problem is Flacco was just flat out bad. He had trouble connecting with any receivers, saw drives stall out regularly, threw an interception and just didn’t light any sort of spark or rhythm with the offense.

So now what? The Colts fell to 4-5 on the season and have the Buffalo Bills up next. Does Flacco get yet another nod despite a woeful performance? Do the Colts quickly double back and go with Richardson a week later? It’s a mess in Indy and is showing that whatever ends up happening the rest of 2024, it’s only going to lead to an even messier 2025.

Good Scary: Raven Fly High, Climb AFC Ladder
After a slow start to the season, it sure looks like the Baltimore Ravens have recovered quite nicely and are showing their teeth as one of the best teams in the AFC. Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry continue to be an outstanding two-headed monster that’s giving opposing defenses fits. Jackson threw three touchdowns while Henry motored to over 100 yards on the ground and a pair of scores as the Ravens steamrolled the Denver Broncos 41-10. The true test for the Ravens is about to begin with back-to-back divisional games against the Bengals and Steelers followed by the Chargers and Eagles the next four games.

Bad Scary: Matt Eberflus Continues To Show He’s Over His Head
How Matt Eberflus is still the Chicago Bears head coach is astounding to me. The man has literally done nothing to keep his job except grow a beard and he got a haircut. That’s it! He doesn’t win football games, that’s for sure. He’s been head coach of the Bears since 2022 and in that time the Bears:
- 0-18 in road games played on Sunday
- 3-18 in road games overall with a -181 point differential
- 2-10 in the NFC North
- 4 losses with a 92+ % chance to win in the 4th quarter
- 14-28 overall
Those are abysmal statistics if you just look at one of them. Look at all of them and you have to wonder what the hell he’s still doing as the head guy in charge. And let’s not forget that last season he had to dismiss two coaches on his staff for inappropriate conduct activity within weeks of each other. He also just seems to have no feel in-game about what to do, he doesn’t use timeouts when he should, stinks at challenges and still doesn’t see why handing off to a backup center against Washington was a stupid play call. He needs to be gone and should have been before the team drafted their franchise quarterback. But he’s still here, for now. But the clock is ticking and the seat is at about 800-degrees.
