As Zak Keefer switches from the Indianapolis Star to join The Athletic, he joins the Fan Morning Show to talk with Jeff and Big Joe about his switch to the new company as well as what he is doing with the Indianapolis Colts at his new job.  He talks about what his expectations are for the upcoming season and what players he believes will truly step up in training camp and early in the season.

What’s the biggest difference with The Athletic?

“I think the biggest they sold me on at The Athletic, and I think you guys already know this that I like to take a deeper look at stories.  Take a deeper dive and write like Darius Leonard’s story from start to finish.  At this job I don’t have to chase the transactions, I don’t have to write the injuries every day, I don’t have to fill the paper every day.  I have a little more freedom to write the stories that I want to tell.  I think those are the stories in the long run the resonate with readers and we’ve seen the feedback in that as well so that is one thing that I am really pumped about the new spot.”

How long do you think Adam Vinatieri will be able to continue to play?

“The thing we need to look out for and I haven’t seen this yet is the trajectory on his field goal.  That the ball isn’t spinning the right way and I’ve talked to a lot of special team coaches about this and that is when he starts to lose it.  I haven’t seen it yet and I did the math and this will blow you guys away.  I think he’s older than a third of the Colts roster and I mean older as in his NFL career, he’s obviously older.  He was playing for the New England Patriots in 1996, before a third of this team was even alive.  He’s one of the cool stories in the NFL.  It’s a one-year deal and it’s always gonna be a decision he makes in January or February depending on how he feels.  I know he was really ticked off at how last season ended.  He did not play well in Kansas City and he was a little banged up.  Part of that is a motivation for him to not go out like that.”
