Colts Place DeForest Buckner on IR
The Indianapolis Colts are facing a challenging period as they place their star defensive tackle, DeForest Buckner, on injured reserve due to a high ankle sprain sustained in their Week 2 matchup against the Green Bay Packers.
This setback is a significant blow to the Colts’ defense, given Buckner’s crucial role as an anchor of their defensive line.
The injury is expected to sideline Buckner for at least four games (Bears, Steelersm Jaguars, & Titans), with the earliest potential return being for the Colts’ Week 7 game against the Miami Dolphins.
The Colts have responded swiftly to Buckner’s absence by making several roster modifications. They promoted defensive end Genard Avery from the practice squad to the active roster. Additionally, the team signed defensive tackle Adam Gotsis, cornerback Gregory Junior, and defensive end Titus Leo to the practice squad while releasing defensive tackle McTelvin Agim and cornerback Ameer Speed.
DeForest Buckner’s absence could have significant implications for the Colts. Known for his durability, Buckner has missed only a handful of games since being drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in 2016. Since joining the Colts in 2020, he has consistently delivered standout performances, recording at least seven sacks in each season.
His leadership and presence on the field have made him a four-time captain, underscoring his importance not only in terms of performance but also in morale and leadership.

Defensive coordinator Gus Bradley highlighted Buckner’s impact on the team, emphasizing his leadership in the defensive line room and his influence on the entire defensive unit. With Buckner sidelined, players like Raekwon Davis, Taven Bryan, and others will need to step up to compensate for his absence.
The Colts’ defense has already struggled in the first two games, allowing 474 rushing yards, and Buckner’s injury adds an additional layer of challenge.
As the Colts navigate the upcoming weeks without one of their defensive stalwarts, the team’s ability to adapt and leverage their adjusted roster will be crucial.
The coaching staff and players will need to rally and find new ways to maintain their defensive integrity and performance on the field.
The next few games will test the Colts’ depth and resilience as they aim to stay competitive in the AFC South.
