INDIANAPOLIS – The first regular season depth chart for the 2024 Colts is here.
Below you will find the Colts release of the depth chart, with my takeaways on it.
Here’s a look at the depth chart, with some takeaways (*denotes rookie):
Quarterback: Anthony Richardson, Joe Flacco, Sam Ehlinger
Running Back: Jonathan Taylor, Trey Sermon, Tyler Goodson
Wide Receiver: Michael Pittman Jr., Ashton Dulin
Wide Receiver: Josh Downs, Anthony Gould*
Wide Receiver: Alec Pierce OR Adonai Mitchell*
Tight End: Mo Alie-Cox, Drew Ogletree
Tight End: Kylen Granson, Will Mallory
Left Tackle: Bernhard Raimann, Blake Freeland
Left Guard: Quenton Nelson, Danny Pinter OR Tanor Bortolini*
Center: Ryan Kelly, Danny Pinter OR Tanor Bortolini*
Right Guard: Will Fries, Dalton Tucker*
Right Tackle: Braden Smith, Matt Goncalves
Offensive Notes:
- Running back reps behind Jonathan Taylor is a mystery as Trey Sermon works back from his hamstring issue. Remember, Evan Hull is on the practice squad.
- No surprises at the pass catching spots on the depth chart. As the Colts did in the preseason, they use the OR tag for Alec Pierce and Adonai Mitchell. Both could be counted on heavily early in the year, until Josh Downs returns. I would lean towards Pierce/Mitchell ahead of Anthony Gould in eating up the Downs playing time.
- Kylen Granson as the main pass catcher and Mo Alie-Cox as the main blocker seem to be at the top of the tight end rotation.
- The other “OR” tag comes with rookie Tanor Bortolini and Danny Pinter. Bortolini has had a toe injury for the last couple of weeks.
- Is rookie Matt Goncalves the swing tackle at both spots? Blake Freeland on the left side of the line doesn’t seem too ideal. Like with the defensive line, who dresses on the offensive line will impact some of the depth that could be needed.
Defensive End: Kwity Paye, Laiatu Latu*
Defensive End: Tyquan Lewis, Dayo Odeyingbo, Isaiah Land
Defensive Tackle: DeForest Buckner, Adetomiwa Adebawore
Defensive Tackle: Grover Stewart, Taven Bryan, Raekwon Davis
WILL: E.J. Speed
MIKE: Zaire Franklin, Segun Olubi
SAM: Jaylon Carlies*, Grant Stuard
Cornerback: JuJu Brents, Dallis Flowers
Cornerback: Jaylon Jones
Nickel: Kenny Moore II, Samuel Womack III
Free Safety: Nick Cross, Rodney Thomas II, Trevor Denbow
Strong Safety: Julian Blackmon
Defensive Notes:
- Defensive line rotation will always be something to watch. I wouldn’t be too married to the depth chart playing out as is. How many the Colts dress on game day will be something to watch, too. Raekwon Davis is working his way back from missing all of training camp at Grand Park. The Colts are paying him a healthy sum, so they need some impact.
- When the Colts go to their base defense, it looks like rookie Jaylon Carlies will be a starter as the 3rd linebacker.
- As expected, new cornerback Samuel Womack III is the backup nickel to Kenny Moore II. With 4 cornerbacks on the practice squad, the Colts do have some options for Dallis Flowers (hamstring) this week.
- Honestly, Nick Cross might be the backup to Julian Blackmon at strong safety, with Ronnie Harrison Jr. no longer around.
Kick Returner: Anthony Gould* OR Dallis Flowers, Josh Downs
Punt Returner: Anthony Gould*, Josh Downs, Dallis Flowers
- Returner Notes: It could indeed be full-on rookie returner duties in Week 1 for Gould?
