INDIANAPOLIS–Quarterback Carson Wentz could be on his way out of Indianapolis.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports the Indianapolis Colts will likely trade or release Wentz. He believes the decision will likely be made by March 18. That’s when $15M in base salary becomes guaranteed for Wentz. He’s also eligible for a multi-million dollar bonus if he’s still on the roster by that date. Mortensen believes the Colts do not want to pay that money.

Indianapolis would also save $53.4 million for the 2023-24 seasons, which are the two non-guaranteed years of Wentz’s deal.

“It looks bleak. The Colts did not give him support verbally after the season, saying they weren’t guaranteeing anything. So for Carson Wentz, it looks like it was a one-year marriage that went wrong,” said Mortensen on Sunday NFL Countdown.

In his first season in Indianapolis, Wentz threw 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions but fell apart late in the season (2 TD’s, INT, and a lost fumble in the last 2 games, averaged less than 7 yards per pass).

The Colts had a 98% chance of making the playoffs with two games left, but lost their last two games to Las Vegas and Jacksonville in the regular season. They finished with a record of 9-8.
