SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Google says NASCAR driver Ryan Newman was the most-searched-for athlete of 2020.
The South Bend native was in the national spotlight after surviving a horrific crash on the final lap of the Daytona 500 in February. The 43-year-old driver was hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Google says search rates soared after the crash, as people looked for updates of Newman’s condition.
Newman, miraculously, made a quick recovery, and checked out of the hospital just two days after the crash. He eventually returned to racing later in 2020. Newman said he didn’t have any memory of the crash.
Michael Jordan was Google’s second-most-searched-for athlete of the year, thanks to ESPN’s 10-part documentary “The Last Dance.”
