Takeaways From Colts 2025 Preseason Depth Chart

INDIANAPOLIS – 22 starters or, I guess, 23 starters.
We do have one OR listed on the Colts first depth chart of 2025, so it’s time to analyze it ahead of preseason’s opener.
What are my takeaways from the Colts first depth chart?
Quarterbacks: Daniel Jones OR Anthony Richardson, Riley Leonard* Jason Bean
Running Back: Jonathan Taylor, Tyler Goodson, DJ Giddens*, Khalil Herbert, Salvon Ahmed, Ulysses Bentley*
Wide Receivers: Michael Pittman Jr., Ashton Dulin, Laquon Treadwell, Ajou Ajou, Tyler Kahmann*
Wide Receivers: Alec Pierce, Adonai Mitchell, D.J. Montgomery, Blayne Taylor*, Landon Parker*
Wide Receivers: Josh Downs, Anthony Gould, Coleman Owen*
Tight Ends: Tyler Warren*, Mo Alie-Cox, Drew Ogletree, Will Mallory, Jelani Woods, Sean McKeon, Maxmilian Mang*
Left Tackle: Bernhard Raimann, Blake Freeland, Marshall Foerner*
Left Guard: Quenton Nelson, Josh Sills, Mose Vavao*
Center: Tanor Bortolini, Danny Pinter, Wesley French
Right Guard: Matt Goncalves, Dalton Tucker
Right Tackle: Braden Smith, Jalen Travis*, Luke Tenuta
Offensive Notes:
-The lone OR we get on this depth chart from the Colts is at quarterback with Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson Sr. It sounds like this quarterback battle will carry, at least, through the team’s second preseason game. Sometimes an OR designation isn’t truly descriptive of the situation, but I think it accurately applies with how the Colts have treated this competition so far.
-Recently, I do think Tanor Bortolini has taken a slight lead over Danny Pinter at center, and that’s reflected here on the first depth chart.
-I see a clear line following those first 4 tight ends listed: Tyler Warren, Mo Alie-Cox, Drew Ogletree and Will Mallory. I think those 4 make the team, with Jelani Woods next up.
-At running back, I still think roles have yet to be defined behind Jonathan Taylor. Tyler Goodson though is back and has flashed, along with having an important starting gunner role on the punt team (Ashton Dulin is the other starting gunner).
Defensive End: Kwity Paye, Tyquan Lewis, JT Tuimoloau*, Desmond Little*
Defensive End: Laiatu Latu, Samson Ebukam, Durell Nchami, Isaiah Land
Defensive Tackle: DeForest Buckner, Neville Gallimore, Adetomiwa Adebawore, Devonta Davis*
Nose Tackle: Grover Stewart, Eric Johnson II, Tim Smith, Josh Tupou
WILL: Cameron McGrone, Jaylon Carlies, Austin Ajiake, Segun Olubi, Solmon DeShields*
MIKE: Zaire Franklin, Joe Bachie, Liam Anderson, Jacob Philips
Cornerback: Charvarius Ward, JuJu Brents, Samuel Womack III, Tre Herndon
Cornerback: Justin Walley*, Jaylon Jones, Jonathan Edwards*, Duke Shelly
Nickel: Kenny Moore II, Alex Johnson, Ladarius Tennison, Chris Lammons
Free Safety: Cam Bynum, Rodney Thomas II, Trey Washington*
Strong Safety: Nick Cross, Hunter Wohler*, Daniel Scott
Defensive Notes:
-At defensive end, Samson Ebukam has rotated some with the starters as he returns from a torn Achilles. Per usual, expect a good amount of rotation here.
-Jaylon Carlies not listed as a starter is confirmation that we’ve seen recently—the starting job next to Zaire Franklin is an open competition. Cam McGrone, an Indy native, is probably a more natural WILL versus newcomer Joe Bachie. But Bachie has certainly flashed in getting ample stating reps with Franklin working back from May ankle surgery.
-Even before the hamstring injuries for Jaylon Jones and JuJu Brents, rookie Justin Walley looked to be securing that important 3rd cornerback role.
-7th round picks earning a roster spot in early August is unusual. But Hunter Wohler is definitely trending in that direction.
Placekicker: Spencer Shrader, Maddux Trujillo*
Kick Returner: Anthony Gould, Ashton Dulin, Tyler Goodson, D.J. Montgomery
Punt Returner: Anthony Gould, Josh Downs, Coelman Owen*
Special Teams Notes:
-At placekicker, Spencer Shrader is definitely the leader. He could likely lock that job up with a strong week in Baltimore.
