Colts Camp Day 2: Bernhard Raimann, Colts Not Close On Extension

INDIANAPOLIS – A scorching Thursday practice greeted the Colts with a few skirmishes coming in the sweltering central Indiana heat.
It was another morning practice as the Colts continue to be in a ramp-up period during this first week of training camp.
Here are some takeaways from Day 2 of Colts training camp:
-As expected, it was Daniel Jones getting the extra team period with the starting unit on Thursday (flipping from Anthony Richardson doing that on Wednesday). Jones finished his day 6-of-10 (5-of-7 with the starters). It was another fairly quiet day down the field for Jones, with his best throw coming on a rollout to the right, hitting Alec Pierce just before the wideout went out of bounds. Ashton Dulin did drop 1 of Jones’ tosses, and a ball with sped-up velocity grazed off the hands of Tyler Warren. Jones completed his 6 passes to AD Mitchell, Josh Downs, Alec Pierce, Tyler Warren, D.J. Giddens, Drew Ogletree. For camp, Jones is unofficially 12-of-18 (6-of-10 with the starters). Through camp, Jones has completed passes to the following guys: Alec Pierce (2), Drew Ogletree (2), AD Mitchell, Josh Downs, Tyler Warren, D.J. Giddens, AD Mitchell, Anthony Gould, Ashton Dulin, Salvon Ahmed.
-Richardson was 3-of-7 (2-of-3 with the starters). D.J. Montgomery did drop a well-thrown ball by Richardson. And AD Mitchell couldn’t come down with an on-target throw, as Jaylon Jones made a nice break on the play to cause the incompletion. The poorest throw from Richardson on Thursday came on a pass he usually delivers well. In looking for Ashton Dulin down the sideline, the typically deep ball accurate Richardson underthrew Dulin significantly, with JuJu Brents happily accepting the interception. If you are looking for Richardson positives from Thursday, he had a fairly accurate day underneath, which is where he has struggled. Richardson’s best throw was an in-traffic toss over the middle to Michael Pittman Jr. Richardson completed his 3 passes to Jonathan Taylor, Michael Pittman Jr.,,Tyler Warren. For camp, Richardson is unofficially 7-of-18 (5-of-10 with the starters). Through camp, Richardson has completed passes to the following guys: Michael Pittman Jr. (3), Tyler Warren, Jonathan Taylor, Anthony Gould, Alec Pierce.
-New defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo has been pleased with the start of his unit in challenging passes. I can see why, as the Colts defense has been active in their contesting of catches, with several pass breakups. That’s a welcomed and needed change for that side of the ball in Indy.
-On Thursday, the Colts gave veteran rest days to the following players: DeForest Buckner, Tyquan Lewis, Braden Smith, Kenny Moore II. That meant some important starting reps for Neville Gallimore (for Buckner), Jalen Travis (for Smith) and Justin Walley (outside cornerback in the base defense with Charvarius Ward). For Travis, filing in at right tackle, this is such an important time for him to try and secure that ever-key swing tackle job. So far, Blake Freeland has been taking the left tackle reps with the second unit, as Travis got bumped up into the starting lineup on Thursday at right tackle. Going back to the “rest” part of things, yes, having a rest day on the second day of camp raises plenty of eyebrows. Shockingly, last year, the Colts actually had a full day off from practice on the second day, whereas they are going for 4 straight sessions to start camp this year. And on the “rest list” Thursday, you have some pretty established names.
-It doesn’t sound like the Colts and left tackle Bernhard Raimann are very close on a contract extension. While appearing Thursday on Query and Company (1075 The Fan’s show from 12-3), Raimann told show host Jake Query that his agent has informed him the Colts and Raimann’s camp “aren’t on the same page” when it comes to a possible contract extension. Full audio of that exchange can be found here. Back on Tuesday, Colts GM Chris Ballard wasn’t too expansive when asked if a contract extension for Raimann was a priority before the start of the 2025 season. “Contracts, you know I won’t talk about that,” the GM said. “But he’s a really good player and we think a lot of him.” Under Ballard, a player of Raimann’s career arc normally receives a contract extension before the start of the season occurs (when the final year on Raimann’s rookie contract). The Colts have a little more than a month to try and make that happen.
-Rookie Tyler Warren found more activity on Thursday catching a ball from each quarterback in 11-on-11 drills. Warren actually bailed Anthony Richardson out on a low thrown ball as the quarterback rolled to his right. Richardson offered a “my bad” gesture and a high-five for Warren as the rookie returned to the huddle.
-We had a Jelani Woods sighting on Thursday, catching a ball down the field from Daniel Jones during a 7-on-7 period. Based off the early team reps, it’s still going to be a challenge, IMO, for Woods to crack the 53-man roster.
-Here is how the starting offense looked on Thursday: QB-Daniel Jones, RB-Jonathan Taylor, WR-Michael Pittman Jr., WR-Alec Pierce, WR-Josh Downs, TE-Tyler Warren, LT-Bernhard Raimann, LG-Quenton Nelson, C-Danny Pinter, RG-Matt Goncalves, RT-Jalen Travis
-Here is how the starting defense looked on Thursday: DE-Samson Ebukam, DT-Grover Stewart, DT-Neville Gallimore, DE-Kwity Paye, LB-Joe Bachie, LB-Jaylon Carlies, CB-JuJu Brents, CB-Charvarius Ward, CB-Justin Walley, S-Cam Bynum, S-Nick Cross.
-Guys that stood out at Thursday’s practice: WR-Laquon Treadwell, RB-D.J. Giddens, S-Rodney Thomas II, CB-JuJu Brents, RT-Jalen Travis.
Injury Report: The following players did not appear to be participating at Thursday’s practice: LB-Zaire Franklin (ankle). The Colts gave veteran rest days to the following players: DeForest Buckner, Tyquan Lewis, Braden Smith, Kenny Moore II.
