Andrew Luck Hires Frank Reich As Interim Head Football Coach At Stanford
Stanford University has named former NFL head coach Frank Reich as its interim football coach, a move orchestrated by Stanford’s general manager, Andrew Luck.
The decision comes on the heels of the university firing head coach Troy Taylor over allegations of misconduct, including hostile and aggressive behavior towards female staff members.
Taylor faced two investigations which cited violations of Stanford’s standards, further compounded by a dismal performance record of consecutive 3-9 seasons.
Andrew Luck, who assumed his role as Stanford’s general manager last November, acted decisively in addressing the program’s need for leadership and culture change.
His selection of Frank Reich is rooted in a deep trust established during their shared time in the NFL.
Reich coached Luck during his final season as quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts in 2018, a year in which the team went 10-6 and advanced to the playoffs.

That bond, alongside Reich’s credentials as a leader and his NFL experience, made him a fitting choice for this transitional period.
Reich brings with him a wealth of knowledge, having served as head coach for both the Indianapolis Colts and the Carolina Panthers.
Known for his offensive expertise, he was also the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles during their historic Super Bowl LII victory.
However, Reich’s recent tenure in the NFL concluded under less favorable circumstances, with Carolina letting him go after a challenging season.
In a statement, Reich expressed his enthusiasm for the position and confidence in Luck’s vision, praising Stanford’s academic excellence as well as the potential of its student-athletes.
“The unique responsibility to mentor the best student-athletes in the world is an opportunity I will fully embrace,” Reich said.
This appointment signals a critical juncture for Stanford football, a program that has struggled to recapture its former dominance in collegiate football.
Reich is expected to provide stability and lay the groundwork for the university’s broader vision, as Stanford searches nationally for a long-term head coach beyond the one-year agreement with Reich.
Under Luck’s leadership and with Reich at the helm, the Cardinal is poised to reset both its on-field strategies and off-field culture.
The move reflects a commitment to both high standards and innovation, as Stanford works to rebuild its football program into a respected force once again.
