Voice of IU Don Fischer On New Coach Darian DeVries

It’s far too early to know what kind of job new Indiana Hoosiers basketball coach Darian DeVries will do as he attempts to get the program back on track.
The ink is still drying on his contract, and outside of his introductory press conference, he has yet to really get underway in Bloomington. Still, while introductory press conferences ultimately don’t win you any games, they can help assuage some concerns, and in this case, even draw some comparisons to another coach at Indiana who undertook a program turnaround of his own.
During the Friday edition of The Ride With JMV, voice of the Hoosiers Don Fischer joined the show, and spoke about his first impressions of the Hoosiers new head man.
“I was very impressed with his press conference; there’s no question about that. He said a lot of things that very much made me think of Curt Cignetti. And I say that in the sense that the things he talked about; practice time, character-type players, getting guys that fit the program, fit the culture. All of those things to me were huge, because they were what Curt Cignetti did in Indiana last year with this football program, and what everybody thinks he’ll continue to do in the future…The things that he said really, really impressed me, and then I got to meet him after the press conference was over with for about five, ten minutes in the locker room, and just had the chance to go one-on-one with him. What a nice man, and what a beautiful family he has, and of course he’s got a son that’s a pretty good basketball player himself, so if he gets that medical redshirt, which I think he’s going to, he will be a major cog for Indiana next year.”
