Cheryl Miller has been named head coach of the WNBA All-Star team that will take on the United States’ women’s national team on Saturday in Phoenix.

Cheryl Miller is a legendary figure in women’s basketball, known for her incredible skills and contributions to the sport. She rose to prominence in the 1980s as a standout player at USC, where she showcased exceptional talent on the court.

Miller’s basketball accolades include being a:

  • Four-time All-American in high school
  • Scored 105 points in a game during her senior season
  • Won back-to-back NCAA championships with USC in 1983 and 1984
  • Three-time Naismith College Player of the Year at USC
  • Helped Team USA win a gold medal at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles
  • Received gold at the World Championships and Goodwill Games in 1986
  • Inductee into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1995
  • Awarded the Cheryl Miller Award for the best women’s basketball small forward in the NCAA

As these are obviously amazing accolade early in her career knee injuries really slowed her down and prevented Cheryl from pursuing any real professional basketball career after college.

A bout 10 years after her college and olympic experience Cheryl decided to take a role that would allow here to shape the sport even more

She made more of her own imprints by:

  • served as the Mercury’s first head coach and general manager from 1997-2000.
  • She took the team to the semifinals in the inaugural 1997 season and the Finals in 1998, where they lost to the dynastic Houston Comets
  • Resigned at the end of the 2000 campaign.  she has become a respected coach, commentator, and advocate for the advancement of women in sports.

And don’t forget this has to be said. Cheryl’s brother is also a NBA Hall of Famer and Basketball great… Reggie Miller.

Cheryl has been handed a roster with, rookie sensation Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, former MVPs Nneka Ogwumike, and Jonquel Jones with freedom to make her own starting lineup and all.

Details on the Team WNBA vs Team USA matchup:

This year’s All-Star Game is set for Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. ET on ABC, and will feature Team WNBA against Team USA.

This will be an exhibition game for Team USA Paris Olympics.

The WNBA did this back in 2021 ahead of the Tokyo Games, and Team WNBA came away with the victory.

Cheryl Reeve who is the head coach of the Minnesota Lynx will lead Team USA in their duties as the national team coach. She has filled that role since 2021.

The WNBA has done a great job creating excitement in the game this year and adding Cheryl Miller as Team WNBA’s coach just  seems special.
