If Tyler Warren Falls, The Colts Should Go Get Him

For almost the entirety of Chris Ballard’s tenure as general manager of the Colts, the team has not been known for trading up in the draft.
Ballard has instead made his bones by trading back, trying to find value in the later rounds while amassing as many picks as he can. The results haven’t exactly been spectacular, and his hesitancy to make a big move has become one of the focal points of frustration for fans. Entering Year 9, it’s now or never for Ballard to change how he does things, and get this thing headed in the right direction. One way he can really show he’s committed to change? By finally moving up in the draft instead of down, and getting a premium, impact player in tight end Tyler Warren.
The fit is obvious; the Colts tight end room was one of, if not the worst in the league last season. Meanwhile, the overall consensus on Warren is that he’s the best tight end in the draft, one that could be a playmaker and security blanket for Anthony Richardson (or whoever is under center for the Colts next season). He’s also a good blocker, which, in the Colts run-heavy offense, is an extremely valuable skill to have.
Now, there is every possibility that some team falls in love with Warren, and he’s off the board far too early for the Colts to make a move. But if that doesn’t happen, and if Warren is still on the board as the 14th pick gets closer and closer, Ballard should do what seemed previously unthinkable for him; pick up the phone and start making some calls.
