Anthony Richardson Teams Up With Renowned Mechanics Coach Chris Hess This Offseason

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson is taking significant steps to improve his game, partnering this offseason with Chris Hess, a well-known passing mechanics coach credited with transforming Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

Richardson, known for his raw athletic prowess and one of the strongest arms in the NFL, has struggled with consistency since entering the league.

After two injury-plagued seasons, the young quarterback has faced scrutiny over his league-worst 47.7% completion rate last season.

Coupled with health concerns, Richardson’s development is at a pivotal juncture as the Colts prepare for the 2025 season.

General Manager Chris Ballard has emphasized the urgency of stabilizing Richardson’s performance, noting the stakes for both the quarterback and the franchise.

To tackle these hurdles, Richardson will work closely with Hess in Florida during the offseason.

Hess, a biomechanics expert, has an impressive track record, having revamped Allen’s throwing motion early in his career.

Allen famously credited Hess for helping him increase his completion percentage from 52.8% as a rookie to over 69% just two years later.

Using high-tech tools like 3D motion capture systems and dual force plates, Hess analyzes every detail of a quarterback’s motion, from biomechanics to footwork, to create a more efficient and accurate throwing process.

For Richardson, the focus will be on improving short and intermediate throws, refining touch passes, and eliminating sloppy footwork in the pocket.

These areas have long been problematic for the Colts’ signal-caller, who often relied more on his physical gifts than on polished mechanics.

With an offseason dedicated to fixing these issues, Richardson hopes to unlock his vast potential in a way that mirrors Allen’s progression.
