INDIANAPOLIS – The Colts (2-2) are keeping their starting quarterback cards close to the vest as they head to Jacksonville in Week 5.
On Friday, the Colts ruled out 3 players for their game with the Jaguars: CB-Kenny Moore II (hip), DE-Kwity Paye (quad), RB-Jonathan Taylor (right ankle).
What is the latest with Anthony Richardson and the other Colts injuries?
- Officially, Anthony Richardson (oblique) was limited in practice all 3 days this week. In the 20-minute daily media viewings of practice this week, Richardson was very limited, not doing anywhere near the amount of work he typically does as a healthy starting quarterback. It was Joe Flacco working most with the frontline skill players, with Sam Ehlinger next up. During Friday’s press conference, Shane Steichen was very non-committal on if Richardson will play on Sunday or not. Asked if Richardson had taken any starting team reps in practice this week, Steichen said the following: “He was limited this week.” In one way, it is super rare to see a guy practice all 3 days and not play in that weekend’s game (especially one who hasn’t been out for a lengthy period of time). But Richardson wasn’t a full participant, and looking very limited in front of the media each of those 3 days. If Flacco was taking the walk-through reps at the start of the week and throwing to starters later in the week, then is he the guy on Sunday in Jacksonville? “We’ll see,” is what Steichen would offer up when asked if Richardson will play in Week 5. The Colts are listing Richardson as questionable for Sunday.
- Jonathan Taylor (ankle) did not practice all week long and will miss Sunday’s game in Jacksonville. This will be the 14th game Taylor has missed due to ankle and thumb injuries in the last 3 years. The Colts are not thinking Taylor’s absence will be the length of a stint on injured reserve (at least 4 games). Expect running back by committee for the Colts with Trey Sermon, Tyler Goodson and a likely called up Evan Hull from the practice squad.
- Kwity Paye (quad) is going to miss a second straight game, due to a hip issue. The defensive end has now missed 10 of 56 games in his career.
- Kenny Moore II (hip) will miss a second straight game. That end of game injury against the Bears has forced the veteran slot corner to miss the last 6 practices.
- Despite missing the last 5 practices, Ryan Kelly (neck) has not been ruled out for Sunday’s game. Kelly is listed as questionable. Are we looking at the second straight start for rookie Tanor Bortolini or could Kelly actually be back, despite no practice?
- It’s early in the year, but we could be looking at some weekly maintenance with Braden Smith (knee), and yet the veteran right tackle still playing come Sunday’s. Smith has missed practice time each of the last 3 weeks, but has played in each of those games. Smith is questionable for Sunday after only practicing on Thursday this week.
- So with Friday’s news, the Colts will be without the following starting defenders on Sunday: DE-Samson Ebukam, DT-DeForest Buckner, DE-Kwity Paye, CB-Kenny Moore II, CB-JuJu Brents.
