[West Lafayette, IN]- The 2024 College Football season started for the Purdue Boilermakers, and Purdue is off to a dominating start.

After going 4-8 last season, Purdue jumped out to a 1-0 start after defeating the Indiana State Sycamores 49-0.

“I feel like we expected this kind of outcome,” Head Coach Ryan Walter’s said on GoldandBlack.com, “Nobody was surprised by it. We just did what we were supposed to do.”

Despite only playing three quarters, Senior Quarterback Hudson Card went 24/25 on his passes for 273 yards. Card threw four touchdowns in the win. His completion percentage of .96 breaks the record set by Kyle Orton in 2004.

“We’ve been talking about how much more comfortable he (Card) is, how much more confident he is.” Walters said.

Indiana’s own Max Klare caught the most passes, finishing the day with five catches for 71 yards and a touchdown. In the rushing attack, Junior Devin Mockobee had the most carries with eleven for 89 yards.

Seven different Boilermakers scored a touchdown against the Sycamores: Klare, Jaron Tibbs, Leland Smith, De’Nylon Morrissette, Elijah Jackson, Reggie Love III, and Jaheim Merriweather.

On the defensive side of the ball, Carmel alumnus Will Heldt and Senior Defensive Back Antonio Stevens led the team in tackles with seven each. Heldt would add two sacks against the Sycamores, while Senior Kydran Jenkins had one. Purdue’s defense held Indiana State to just 154 yards of total offense on the day, and only allowed one third down conversion.

Purdue’s offense totaled 583 yards, with 335 yards coming through the air from Card and backup QB Ryan Browne.

The only major blemish for the Boilermakers in the game was the number of penalties committed. Purdue was penalized 11 times for 110 yards.

“There were still areas of the game that were sloppy,” Walters said, “If you look at the stat sheet, we had eleven penalties to their two. That can’t happen if we want to continue to have success on game days.”
