As the Indianapolis Colts and the Arizona Cardinals hold a pair of joint practices ahead of their preseason game on Saturday, Colts general manager Chris Ballard sat down on the Wednesday edition of The Ride With JMV.
One of the biggest questions about the Colts roster heading into 2024 was the health of quarterback Anthony Richardson. The Colts, in their first preseason game against the Broncos, chose to be cautious with Richardson, only having him lead two drives and generally not putting him in harm’s way. Ballard spoke on what he took away from Richardson’s limited reps.
“I mean, he played. We got him out there. He played, and then on the scramble, he ducked out of bounds. Those are two good things. I think he’d like to have the 3rd down throw to Granson back, I think he would tell you that. He put it a little bit on his back shoulder, he hung on the over route for probably a little longer, looking to get a big chunk, when he had Granson screaming across and Granson had leverage, but other than that, we got out there, got his feet [wet again].”
Another big concern for the Colts is in their young secondary. Chris spoke about his confidence in the group, and why he is okay not adding a veteran piece at this moment.
“It’s a fair question, it’s not one that I don’t think is a fair question…We like some of the things we saw out of our young group last year to think that they’re going to continue to ascend. I’m not saying at some point we could do something, but at this time we just want to keep seeing these young guys.”
