Round one between the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans went to the latter down in Nashville on September 26th. Carson Wentz was dealing with two sprained ankles, yet the Colts still had a chance to win the game. Since the 25-16 loss, the Colts have gone 3-1 with wins over the Dolphins, Texans, and 49ers. Tennessee’s record is identical with wins over Jaguars, Bills and Chiefs after losing to the New York Jets.

The Titans currently have a two game lead on the Colts in the AFC South. If the Titans walk into Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday and come away with a win, then they will essentially have a four game lead on the Colts with nine games left. All playoff aspirations for the Colts would turn to the wild card. Mike Tirico of NBC Sports joined the Dan Dakich Show on Tuesday emphasize the importance of teams, especially the Colts, to win their division with the additional playoff team.

“To be a five, six, or seven seed and go on the road, it’s going to be really hard. Can the Colts go on the road and win three road playoff games against the likes of Buffalo, whoever is going to win the (AFC) West, Kansas City, the Chargers, Vegas, and then Baltimore? You can win one, you can win two, but it’s hard to win three. That’s why I think it is so important to win your division.” Said Tirico.

Keep in mind, the Colts have yet to play the most difficult portion of their schedule in the eyes of many. Frank Reich’s team still has the Buffalo Bills, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Arizona Cardinals, and the Las Vegas Raiders left on the schedule. The combined record off those teams entering week eight is 22-5. Tirico would state the honesty about this week during his conversation with DD.

“Look this is the division. If Tennessee gets to 6-2, you fall to 3-5, you’re three out, extensively you’re three and a half games out. You have to make up  four games in the last nine, not likely. But if you get them and all of a suddenly now you’re one back in the loss column with the head-to-head, then the calculus changes really fast here.”

Other topics that Tirico discussed with Dan on Tuesday were the format of the College Football Playoff, if Notre Dame has a chance to make the CFP, and how Tom Brady continues to amaze him.
