When the Colts signed quarterback Philip Rivers to a one-year, $25 million contract this offseason, people took notice.
The move spelled the end for Jacoby Brissett as a starter, reunited Rivers with his former offensive coordinator, Frank Reich, and signaled a shift in GM Chris Ballard’s philosophy. It’s ‘win now’ mode in Indianapolis.
Now that Rivers is the guy calling the shots, the pressure is on him to perform at a high level both on and off the field.
With that said, Dan Dakich isn’t liking what he’s hearing from Rivers in the media and took issue with the veteran QB admitting, “I don’t feel like I have anything to prove.”
Dan explained his thoughts on Rivers’ comment on Friday’s edition of The Dan Dakich Show.
“Well, then you shouldn’t be playing,” Dakich said.
“Maybe that’s why Rivers has never won anything. Maybe that’s why Rivers has never done jack squat. He won a playoff game [in Indy] one time, so he’s done enough I suppose…But I do know this: maybe his mentality is so much different than Michael Jordan’s that he’s just a guy at 39 trying for one more huge paycheck to pay for his 18,000 kids. He’s got 9 kids, so maybe he’s trying to pay for his kids. I don’t know. Philip Rivers my ass.”
Philip Rivers is not Michael Jordan, however the mindset of having nothing to prove can be a dangerous one. Rivers did expand on his initial statement, saying, “…I am excited, though, to go have a better season, go play better, help this team win a bunch of games.”
So there is an acknowledgement that 20 interceptions and a 22nd-best adjusted QB rating in 2019 won’t get the job done in Indy.
“Philip Rivers was horrible,” Dan said. “I watched the film. He was horrible last year. And then he comes with an attitude that now says, ‘I have nothing to prove’…I’ve got a 38-year-old quarterback with $25 million who can’t figure out that championship players always have something to prove.”
Even with a relative question mark at starting quarterback, Colts fans remain optimistic that a deep playoff run is in the cards for 2020.
