Syracuse alum and ESPN broadcaster Jason Benetti has been the play-by-play broadcaster for the Chicago White Sox since 2016 and joins the show to talk with his friend DD about midseason MLB Baseball and what he has seen from the season so far and his expectations for the Chicago White Sox.
How good are the White Sox?
“White Sox are actually, I mean they could have the all-star starting pitcher in the American League. For your folks that haven’t caught up with the White Sox, Lucas Giolito is a dude. He has made one of the biggest transformations you’ve ever seen on a baseball diamond. The guy’s ERA has dropped nearly 4 points from last year. He is at 2.22 and he’s killing it. It’s ridiculous and if you need another reason to root for that guy, his grandfather was on Seinfeld and his mom is an actress, and his uncle co-created Twin Peaks. So we’ve got dudes now. Yoan Moncada has been killing the ball when he’s been healthy. Eloy Jimenez, sorry Cubs fans, we have him now. He has 11 home runs and he’s spent some time on the injured list so 11 is pretty good. We got Tim Anderson who people don’t like in Kansas City but like everywhere else. Something is building over here.”
Who do you think is the best team in the American League?
“I gotta say the Astros when they are healthy I would take, but this Yankees team that just came through. They are gonna get Edwin Encarcion, they are going to get Stanton, they are going to get Judge. They are going to have the most ridiculous lineup that we’ve seen in decades I think. This is the deepest power lineup you could imagine. I don’t know who is going to beat them offensively. If they face teams with sketchy pitching it’s going to be no contest, if they stay healthy. I’m going to go Astros and Yankees, I love the Twins and what they are doing. They’re revamped their coaching staff and have a lot of the same guys and are crushing the ball and have solid pitching. But I would say Yankees and Astros right now.
