Colts Add Veteran Running Back Khalil Herbert

INDIANAPOLIS – Re-tooling the running back insurance behind Jonathan Taylor was a needed focus for the Colts in 2025.
And Chris Ballard took a step in that direction on Wednesday by agreeing to terms with veteran running back Khalil Herbert.
In 4 NFL seasons, Herbert has averaged 4.8 yards per carry (1,905 rushing yars on 400 carries and caught 53 balls for 312 yards in his 56 games played.
Herbert, 5-9 and 212 pounds, has rarely been the feature back, spending all of his time in Chicago before being traded to Cincinnati at the mid-way point of last season.
Even though Taylor proved to be back to his elite self last year with the Colts, it was too often him or bust at the running back position.
Trey Sermon (free agent) and Tyler Goodson struggled in 2024 to find any reliable production when Taylor headed towards the bench.
That’s not sustainable at a position with such attrition over a 17-game season
Even with the addition of Herbert, the Colts would be wise to spend a Day 3 draft pick at the running back position next month.
While Herbert, who turns 27 next month, has shown an ability to catch the football, that receiving threat to off-set the elite first and second-down strength of Taylor could use more resources in helping Anthony Richardson find easier better in the passing game.
Herbert was a 6th round pick of the Bears in 2021.
