Colts Defensive Injury Issues Continue With Tyquan Lewis

The Indianapolis Colts may have gotten their second win of the season against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but they certainly didn’t walk out unscathed.
Quarterback Anthony Richardson and running back Jonathan Taylor both left the contest early, though both thankfully appear to have escaped with relatively minor ailments. Defensive lineman Tyquan Lewis was not so lucky; he also left the game early with what appeared to be an elbow injury, and on Tuesday the team announced that he would be headed to IR.
For Lewis, it’s yet another injury issue, which has become the common theme in his career. When he’s on the field, he has played relatively well, but unfortunately the best ability is availability, and Lewis has not been able to provide that up to this point. That’s why he has not been counted on to be anything more than a role player on the defensive line.
For the Colts, it’s the continuation of a rough stretch for the health of their defense, especially on the defensive line. Samson Ebukam, DeForest Buckner, Kwity Paye and now Lewis are all out; at some point, the injury situation could reach critical mass. There were already lots of concern about the Colts defensive secondary, even when everyone was healthy. With the defensive line so beat up, even more strain is going to be placed on that secondary, as well as on rookie Laitu Latu.
