The Mets’ minor league team, the Syracuse Mets, comes to Indianapolis this week and what does that mean? Tim Tebow is in Indianapolis. A guy that has been along for the ride, the voice on the radio covering the Mets, Michael Tricarico, joins Greg Rakestraw who is filling in for Dan Dakich. They discuss Tim Tebow coming to town, the popularity surrounding him, the number of fans that attend, his athleticism, and more.

On the crowds and fans that come out to see Tim Tebow:

“I actually don’t have an exact number on that (the number of fans that come out and the increase in attendance) and maybe that is something I can get our research team on to have an exact number but I have to say there definitely has been a jump because of Tim and because of the New York Mets. I think it is something that is just new. I don’t know how much it has died down a little bit. This is Tim’s third year in minor league baseball. I think the biggest kind of bump in attendance was when he was down in Colombia with the single A offiliates for the New York Mets. Obviously that is more SEC country, up in Syracuse it is not as big. But again, Tim has that big name recognition more than anyone else that it is definitely something different. The interesting thing about our team this year, I think the most unique thing, is that Tim alone being on our team would be a huge storyline but the number of major leaguers that we have on our team this year is unlike anything that I have ever seen and I think unlike anything you will see in the future. We have guys like Rajai Davis on this team, we have Gregor Blanco, we had Carlos Gomez on our team earlier this year. We had Ervin Santana, who was just an all-star a couple years ago as a starting pitcher. The list goes on and on. We had at one point, more than 10,000 games of major league experience on our roster. The Tim Tebow effect is definitely big but then the whole other side of it, this is a team that has a whole bunch of major leaguers.”

On the overall impressive athlete that Tim Tebow is:

“He is certainly built and he is someone that our coaching staff even sometimes jokes with him, ‘you know Tim, you’re not dealing with that football load anymore, you can maybe slim down and work on your quickness especially as an outfielder.’ Tim is one of those guys that is always pushing himself whether it is in the weight room, on the baseball field, skill wise, mental wise, things like that. I am certainly jealous of the amount of weight that he can lift and the type of athlete that he is. He can still move, but I think he is trying to work on the agility a little bit more. Trying to adjust what baseball is versus football shape because it is a little bit different. When you are a quarterback in the NFL you have to be able to take the big hits, especially with a guy like Tim who was known as more of a running quarterback but here in baseball you don’t have to worry about the big hits as much.”
