The Indianapolis Colts are on the brink of starting the season 0-4 with a date against former Colts quarterback Jacoby Brissett and the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Colts quarterback Carson Wentz has had a sluggish start to the season and the numbers reflect it. The North Dakota State product has only thrown for 692 yards, 3 touchdowns, and has a 60.4% completion rate. NFL Analyst Greg Cosell and senior producer at NFL Films stopped by the Dan Dakich Show on Thursday to break down what he has seen from the new Colts quarterback.

“At one point I thought Wentz was going to be phenomenal, but it hasn’t quiet played out that way. Just watching Wentz at this point, there are certain things that are problematic. I think he leaves some throws on the field, there are times he waits too long for routes to develop, other times he just doesn’t turn it loose when the throws are there, and the result is that he gets stuck in the pocket and takes too many hits and sacks.”

Cosell would then go on to say that he feels that Wentz is on track to get back or near to 2017 form when he threw for 3,296 yards, 33 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions, but declares that coaching will be the biggest factor into his success in a Colts uniform.

“I think he needs constant coaching with his mechanics because he has a tendency to lose his mechanics. He has a tendency to over-stride and what that often does is it leads to scatter shot throws, so he’s one of those quarterbacks that needs constant work with his mechanics.”

During his conversation with Dan, Cosell also broke down what he has seen from Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields. You can listen for the full breakdown on Wentz, Fields, and Lawrence below!
