LaPhonso Ellis evaluates the challenges of rebuilding in today’s NBA
With NBA Summer League giving fans a first look at the ongoing youth movement rebuild of the Indiana Pacers, it makes you think how difficult it is to go from lottery team to contender. Of course, for most teams, that type of leap doesn’t happen overnight.
Traditionally if you hit on all of your draft picks, and bring in the right veterans, a team can go from lottery to playoffs in a few years. There’s plenty of exceptions to that, particularly if you land a generational talent in the draft, but more and often than not it’s a multi-year process.
As it relates to the Pacers, that’s a process that has only just begun.
In order to get a better understanding of the rebuild process and the challenges it can present, The Dan Dakich Show turned to ESPN’s LaPhonso Ellis.
On Monday, the Notre Dame great and 5th Pick in the 1992 NBA Draft took some time to discuss:
- Why it’s so hard to rebuild in the modern NBA
- The learning curve that all rookies face after making it to the Association
- How teams can fast track that learning curve and the overall growth of its rookies
- What he thinks about the current state of the Indiana Pacers
