INDIANAPOLIS – Anthony Richardson struggled on Saturday, coming off one of his better camp weeks as a pro.

The Colts were back on the practice field Saturday morning, with a pair of weekend sessions on the schedule before they head to Baltimore for the next week.

Here are some takeaways from Day 8 of Colts training camp:

-More starting work went to Daniel Jones on Saturday, and he answered by going 11-of-14 for the morning (9-of-11 with the starters). Jones completed his 9 passes to: Josh Downs (3), Ashton Dulin (2), Tyler Warren (2), Mo Alie-Cox, AD Mitchell. With the starters, Jones led a nice two-minute drive to end practice, ending in a Spencer Shrader field goal. He also had a solid goal-to-go period to start the day, with the second unit. While Jones certainly had the better 11-on-11 day, compared to Richardson, he had some problems in 7-on-7. Jones was picked by Joe Bachie, and then two plays later Nick Cross got the veteran QB on a poor decision back across the end zone. For camp, Jones is 67-of-97 (unofficially), with his completions to Ashton Dulin (9), Josh Downs (9), Anthony Gould (8), AD Mitchell (5), Will Mallory (4), Khalil Herbert (4), Michael Pittman Jr. (3), Tyler Warren (5), Alec Pierce (3), Drew Ogletree (3), D.J. Giddens (2), Jonathan Taylor (2), Drew Ogletree (2), Salvon Ahmed, Mo Alie-Cox.

-Well, that was arguably Anthony Richardson’s rockiest day of camp. He started practice going 0-of-3 on a goal-to-go period and ended going 1-of-4 in a two-minute situation. For the entire day, Richardson was 3-of-10 (0-for-3 with the starters). Richardson completed his 3 balls to Drew Ogletree, AD Mitchell and LaQuon Treadwell. The start to Saturday’s practice had some goal-to-go focus and Richardson has definitely had his most passing game struggles in this area, where the field shrinks and the windows get tighter. Following Tuesday’s practice, Richardson worked directly with Alec Pierce in some routes vs. air, something we usually don’t see from that duo. Frankly, the Richardson we saw on Saturday looked like the one we’ve seen quarterback in 2023 and 2024—too inaccurate and not enough anticipation with his throws. Kenny Moore II picked Richardson in the end zone and later Samuel Womack III jumped an out route but couldn’t grasp the extremely interceptable ball. After one of Richardson’s strongest camp weeks ever, Saturday was a definite step in the other direction. For camp, Richardson is unofficially 51-of-94. He has completed his 51 balls to Michael Pittman Jr. (10), Ashton Dulin (6), Josh Downs (6), Tyler Warren (5), Anthony Gould (5), Will Mallory (3), Drew Ogletree (3), AD Mitchell (3), D.J, Montgomery (2), Alec Pierce (2), Jonathan Taylor, D.J. Giddens, Tyler Goodson, Mo Alie-Cox, Jelani Woods, LaQuon Treadwell.

-A sideline toe-tap courtesy of AD Mitchell brought one of the louder cheers of the day at Grand Park. Mitchell spoke to the media after practice and acknowledged a much better feeling in his Week 2 performance vs. “my hands weren’t working” in Week 1 of camp. Good week of work for No. 10.

-Saturday brought the camp practice debut for defensive captain Zaire Franklin. The signal calling linebacker will be eased back into team drills, as May ankle surgery sidelined about 3 months. Without Franklin, perhaps no Colts player has earned more coaching trust than veteran Joe Bachie. In coming over from Cincinnati (where he played for Lou Anarumo), Bachie has received tons of starting work. He signed with the Colts in the spring and has certainly flashed in a defensive setting. On Saturday, Bachie picked off Daniel Jones during a 7-on-7 period.

-We have a definite leader in the kicker battle, although this competition will continue for at least another week. Spencer Shrader is 87 percent on his camp kicks, going 3-of-4 on Saturday, with a miss off the right upright. Maddox Trujillo is 74 percent on his camp kicks, going 2-of-3 on Saturday. Special teams coordinator Brian Mason said following practice that the two young kickers will continue to split reps through the Baltimore week. Again, everything is trending towards Shrader locking this job up.

-Will Mallory continues to string strong days together in the receiving game. The former 5th round pick is a tight end that appears to have cemented his spot on the roster. Playing time behind Tyler Warren remains to be seen, but Mallory will definitely be in that mix.
