Indiana University baseball’s Matt Gorski joins JMV to discuss his reaction when he received the news that he was selected 57th overall in the MLB draft by the Pittsburg Pirates, his perspective on this past season, coach Jeff Mercer, what his college career as a Hoosier meant to him, and his future.

On where he was when he received the news that he was going to be drafted:

“It was actually a little bit different than most people had it. I was actually still in Bloomington getting packed up so I could come back today to meet with my parents to sit down and watch the draft because I was expected to go probably sometime today. So I was alone at my house in Bloomington when I got the news so it was proably a little bit different.”

On actually receiving the news:

“The area scout for the Pirates called me earlier in the night and said “keep your phone by you, you may hear something later in the night.” A few picks before it happened, they called and said they were going to take me at 57th and happy to have you in black and gold. I got the news and I was a little bit frozen, I couldn’t breathe very well, I was a little shaky but I just had to sit down and take it all in and then I watched it happen and it was a really cool moment.”

On what his college career meant to him and his future:

“The three years I spent in Bloomington were the best years of my life. I learned a ton, I grew a ton, the staff down there is unbelievable, the athletic department, the fans, the teammates, the coaches, everyone. They are phenomenal people. If it ends up working out signing this year, I am sad to be leaving but moving on to the next level has always been a dream of mine. I am excited to take that next step and if it is with the Pirates this year I am excited to get going. We obviously have a lot to talk about in the next few days as they get done drafting and then I need to get down to wherever they are going to send me and see where I end up. I’m excited to get moving but sad to be leaving such a great place.”
