Last Saturday, the Indianapolis Colts travel to Arizona and picked up an important 22-16 win over the Cardinals. However, before the game even started, the Colts found out that they would be without their All-Pro linebacker Darius Leonard.

As the Colts (and other teams around the NFL) frequently say, next man up. That happened to be E.J. Speed, and he came ready to play. He finished the night tied for the team lead in solo tackles with eight and tackles with nine. He was simply all over the field for the flying Colts defense.

Speed joined the Ride With JMV on Thursday and pulled back the curtains on what was going on behind the scenes when the players found out they would be without their defensive heartbeat.

“I think that week we all understood how big that game was. When we found out that people were going down, coach brought everybody up in a defensive meeting, and we had some encouraging words from Khari Willis. He talked about making moments bigger than what is expected than the moment and being able to step into roles.”

The good news for Colts fans is that Darius Leonard will be back on Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders after being activated off of the COVID/Reserve list Thursday afternoon. Speed will go back to his back-up role and making an impact on special teams.
