INDIANAPOLIS — The NCAA took another step towards establishing a new constitution to govern college sports.

The board of governors unanimously agreed Thursday to accept the final recommendations from the constitutional committee, which was tasked with proposing a new governance model.

The new constitution would give each of the three NCAA divisions more freedom in governing themselves and would emphasize student-athletes physical and mental well-being.

A new constitution would allow each division to create unique rules, which would undoubtedly lay the groundwork for a complete restructuring of Division 1 athletics, the NCAA’s highest level of competition. Right now 350 schools are in Division 1 status.

The entire membership will vote on whether to adopt the new 20-page constitution at the 2022 NCAA convention on January 20th. If approved, the new model would take effect on August 1st.
