Xavier Rhodes knows from personal experience that Matthew Stafford in the pocket with time available is dangerous for any team. He and the Indianapolis Colts defense made it a priority to make his life difficult on Sunday.

Stafford threw for 336 yards with three touchdowns and an interception in the 41-21 Colts win, but was also sacked five times. Indianapolis took away the Detroit run game by giving up just eight yards combined between Adrian Peterson and D’Andre Swift; Which put even more pressure on Stafford to perform.

Rhodes jumped on The Ride with JMV on Monday afternoon to recap the win and what he saw from Ford Field in Week 8.

“We had to get to (Stafford) because he’s a top five quarterback for me that I’ve played against,” Rhodes told JMV. “If you allow him to sit in that pocket he’s going to pick you apart. So that was the emphasis in getting to him as fast as possible so he couldn’t read the defense.”

Many were looking forward to the primetime matchup of Rhodes versus Lions number one wide receiver Kenny Golladay. But Golladay was limited to just 18 snaps because of a hip injury. He is expected to miss about a week per Pro Football Talk. Even without him, Detroit presented challenges at times but the Colts took care of business.

“We were all playing as a unit,” Rhodes added. “That’s what we’ve been trying to do all season in running to the ball, being physical, and playing fast, smart, and situational football.”

It certainly helped that the Colts welcomed star linebacker Darius Leonard back to the lineup. “The Maniac” had one of the five sacks on Stafford and nine tackles. Rhodes picked up three solo tackles of his own.

Good timing on the Leonard front too. The Blue and White will need all hands on deck in the next four weeks. The big stretch on the schedule starts with the Baltimore Ravens this coming Sunday; Then the Tennessee Titans twice and the Green Bay Packers.

Now tied for third in the league with 12 total takeaways, the Indianapolis defense will look to continue their lockdown stretch.
