INDIANAPOLIS – Each day, 1070 The Fan will bring you a full camp notebook covering a variety of tidbits from Colts Training Camp at Grand Park in Westfield.
Monday was the 14th practice for the Colts at Grand Park, with the team having 18 total practices in Westfield this camp.
Here is what was learned from the 14th day of practice:
-Andrew Luck did throw two interceptions during Monday’s full-padded practice. Head here for an update on how Luck looked on Monday.
-Monday was another session in full pads. It was the 9th practice in full pads this camp.
-For a second straight day, the Colts had Le’Raven Clark at left tackle and Braden Smith at right tackle. Obviously, Clark’s stay at left tackle is short lived until Anthony Castonzo gets back. But Smith should now be viewed as a legit threat to earn playing time at right tackle. Veteran Austin Howard hasn’t seen consistent starting reps in a week, so the Colts are looking at other options. Smith has a tackle frame at 6-6 and 315 pounds, but 39 of his 41 college starts came at right guard. His 2 other starts did come at right tackle, so we will see if that develops into some preseason reps there. Frank Reich acknowledges Smith had some early growing pains in moving to tackle, but the Colts like his footwork and mental capacity.
-In general, it seemed like a sloppier day for the passing offense. The Colts were without Eric Ebron and T.Y. Hilton in team drills. Andrew Luck was picked off twice by Quincy Wilson and D.J. White. One interception came off an overthrow, the other was from miscommunication.
-It looks like the Colts are going day on, day off right now with safeties Malik Hooker and Clayton Geathers. The two were practicing in full pads together for the first time in 2018 during Monday’s session.
-The Colts had a heavy run emphasis to Monday’s practice, with Jordan Wilkins earning the starting job in live 3rd-and-1 periods. It was a nice performance from the starting offensive line to move the chains.
-Couple of good moments from Reece Fountain on Monday. It’s time for the rookie to string these together with the loss of Deon Cain.
-With Anthony Walker still sidelined, the Colts have not been afraid to give 7th round pick Zaire Franklin a shot at the MIKE position. In Monday’s runs drills, Tyrell Adams joined the linebacker starting group.
-A shorter practice on Monday came after a longer session Sunday. Monday’s practice ended with the offensive and defensive lines catching punts. A joy to their teammates was seeing the big fellas try and haul in punts from the jugs machine. It always makes for an interesting sight. OL-Marc Glowinski and OT-Austin Howard misjudged their chances. But OL-Jeremy Vujnovich, DE-Jabaal Sheard, DL-Margus Hunt, DE-John Simon, OT-Le’Raven Clark and DE-Tarell Basham all caught their punts. On the line for catching the punts was getting out of team meetings on Monday night.
-The following players also missed Monday’s practice: C-Deyshawn Bond (undisclosed), OL-Tyreek Burwell (knee), OT-Anthony Castonzo (right hamstring), RB-Josh Ferguson (undisclosed), OT-Denzelle Good (hamstring), DL-Tyquan Lewis (right foot), RB-Marlon Mack (left hamstring), CB-Chris Milton (hip), DT-Caraun Reid (hamstring), TE-Erik Swoope (veteran’s day off), DE-Kemoko Turay (knee), RB-Robert Turbin (ankle), LB-Anthony Walker (groin), WR-James Wright (knee). On the first play of Monday’s practice, TE-Eric Ebron got his left ankle rolled up on. Ebron practiced a few more plays before leaving practice. New running back Branden Oliver left practice early on and had his right hamstring area wrapped. WR-T.Y. Hilton also sat out team drills.
-Listen to this quote from Frank Reich about John Simon: “The more intense things get, the better he gets (live periods, preseason games). He’s having a great camp.” Yep, Simon has been a big-time riser at Grand Park. Simon could very well start come Week One.
-Obviously, with the injury situation coming out of Thursday’s preseason opener, the Colts were going to add a receiver and running back. The wideout is Matt Hazel, who played in 4 games for the Colts last season. At running back, the team signed Branden Oliver. The speedy Oliver has played in 30 career games for the Chargers, showing some nice moments with 226 carries for 773 yards and 55 grabs for 409 yards. Oliver, who stands 5-8 and 208 pounds, has battled injuries in his 4 NFL seasons.
-Two famous visitors to Monday’s practice with former punter Pat McAfee and Indy 500 winner Alexander Rossi in attendance. McAfee was there for a SIRIUS radio show. Rossi also was present for some media work.
-The Colts will have their final night practice of camp on Tuesday. The last off day of camp comes Wednesday. They will practice during the afternoon Thursday-Saturday to close out camp, with the Baltimore Ravens in town Friday and Saturday for joint practices.
