The Fan Morning Show welcomed Ed Carpenter to break down all things May. As both a driver and a team owner (Ed Carpenter Racing), he has his hands full during the most packed month for IndyCar. Alongside Jeff and Big Joe, Ed previews the Grand Prix, his opinions on road courses verses oval, strategies involving his racing team and much more!

On having a better first lap than last year’s Grand Prix:

“You have to race. Starts at a place like this are always difficult. You got a super long front straightaway down to a tight turn one. We see at places like Long Beach and St. Petersburg, it’s always a recipe for an accident down there. If you go into it just trying to avoid something, you’ve got just as good of a chance to get caught up in it anyways. You have to race and hope you get through.”

On having Ed Jones and Spencer Pigot apart of his team:

“For a team like ours, we are still fairly new. We aren’t a Penske or Ganassi or even an Andretti. It’s hard to keep a guy like Josef Newgarden when a bigger team comes calling. We’re kind of like a mid-level franchise in other sports. When Los Angeles comes calling, it can be a big lure. That’s why we’ve looked towards guys like Spencer and Ed that are younger and that have had success in the Road to Indy program…you hope they will want to stay with what we are building.”

The Ed Carpenter Racing team is ready to compete with the Grand Prix on Saturday and the 500 just a few weeks away. Buckle up, as The Fan is loaded with lots of Indy 500 content during the whole month of May!
