IndyCar driver and Noblesville native Conor Daly has grown up at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and talks to DD about how it would feel to win in his own backyard. Son of driver Derek Daly, he spent his childhood going to the Indy 500 as the son of a driver and that is what drove him to really become an IndyCar driver himself. He has been here many times before but believes this year might just be his best chance yet.
How do you feel now racing under the team of Andretti Autosports in 2019?
“I’ve never been more comfortable or happy, this is a whole new world for me. This whole month has been everything I really thought it would be and more. Obviously it would awesome to qualify in the first row or whatever and all that stuff but you know what. There has been a bit of a difference in manufacturers this month, I think the Chevy’s have been a little bit stronger than us when it comes to raw speed. When you look at it though, I have Marco (Andretti) right next to me, and Alex (Rossi) who’s won a race right their in ninth. So we are ninth, tenth, and eleven. Essentially all I wanted was to be right next to my teammates. The team’s doing an incredible job for and I love my teammates, I’ve honestly had a smile on my face everyday.”
What is your earliest memory of coming to the Indianapolis 500?
“I mean it was earliest as when I was an infant. I was a racing babies on the front straight. It was me and Scott Goodyear’s son and even Marissa Andretti. All the young sons and daughters of racing families were all down there. I mean this track is every part of my childhood. The most memorable thing I’ve ever done as a child or growing up were all here. I mean all the pictures I have as a young child were probably at the racetrack. All my family scrapbook photos are all either Christmas, my birthday, or the racetrack.”
Conor Daly grew up loving racing and is now competing yet again to win the prestigious Indianapolis 500. As a new member of Andretti Autosports, it’ll be interesting to see if his chance are now raised and will finally allow him to chug the victorious milk on Sunday.
