Mike Chappell of CBS4 and Fox 59 stopped by The Ride with JMV on Thursday to discuss the Colts offseason. They touched on Anthony Castonzo’s pending decision to retire or play next year, what positions the Colts need to strengthen this offseason, and whether or not Adam Vinatieri could return to the Colts.

The most important move of the offseason for the Colts will be what their staple at left tackle, Anthony Castonzo, decides to do about his future.

Chris Ballard said after the season that Castonzo was thinking about hanging them up, and that a decision would be made after talking with him. How would that change what Ballard and co. need to do before training camp rolls around again in July?

“If Castonzo doesn’t come back, I could almost argue that the top of the list is left tackle because there’s no one on the roster. They’ve done nothing to prepare for this, they really haven’t. Left tackles are so hard to find. People don’t get rid of them,” Chappell told JMV.

“They’re 2-10 without Castonzo, and anyone who wants to see this offense operate without a left tackle then knock yourself out because you’re going to get your quarterback beat up.”

Quarterback obviously falls in line with whatever Castonzo decides to do.

If he comes back, then quarterback is priority number one this offseason. If he retires, then like Chappell said, the Colts have to first and foremost figure out who will be their left tackle of the future.

JMV then posed an interesting scenario for Chappell. What’s more likely to happen – Adam Vinatieri returns to the Colts, or Chris Ballard either drafts a quarterback at 13, or moves up to get a quarterback?

“I don’t think they move up to take a quarterback. First of all, how high will you move up because you’ve got three or four teams above you that need quarterbacks. I think they take a quarterback second round, and Brissett’s your starter and you let this guy sort of compete and learn…I just don’t see them moving up top 6 or 7 to get a quarterback.”

The roster has many holes and positions that need to be addressed. Unfortuantely right now, their two biggest ones are probably the two most important in the game. With that being said, there are a few other spots that need to be strengthened to help the Colts get back to the playoffs on a consistent basis.

“I think there’s two or three positions that they need to get veteran help because even with nine draft picks, and what is it? Three of the top 44, I just think you need more…I just think you need more veteran guys.”
