Braden Smith Reveals What Kept Him From Playing In the 2024 Season
Braden Smith, the Indianapolis Colts’ offensive tackle, faced a challenging 2024 season as he battled severe obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), specifically a condition known as religious scrupulosity.
He revealed this in an interview with the Indianapolis Star.
This form of OCD caused Smith to obsess over thoughts of offending God, leading to compulsive behaviors like constant prayer and repentance.
The mental toll was so severe that Smith contemplated suicide and considered retiring from football.
Seeking help, Smith spent 48 days in a mental health facility but saw limited improvement.
He later turned to ibogaine, a psychedelic treatment not legal in the U.S., undergoing therapy in Mexico.
This, combined with ongoing psychological support, helped Smith regain control of his life.
He now reports significant progress, no longer engaging in compulsive behaviors, and feels ready to contribute fully to his team and family.
Smith restructured his contract with the Colts for the 2025 season, lowering his salary to help the team while expressing his commitment to returning stronger.
Colts GM Chris Ballard praised Smith’s recovery and emphasized his value to the team. Smith, determined to move forward, stated, “I want to be me again here, and I want the people around me to experience that.”
